The library building was inaugurated by the late Dr. Shankar Dayal Sharma, the former Vice President of India, on October 21, 1988.
It is named in honor of the late Prime Minister, Mrs. Indira Gandhi.

Primary goal is to transform the library into a highly effective Learning Resource Center, making a valuable contribution to the quality of higher education.
