Himayat Sagar
Himayat Sagar: An Artificial Lake
Situated approximately 20 kilometers from Hyderabad in Telangana, India, in the Ranga Reddy district.
Runs parallel to the larger artificial lake, Osman Sagar.
The reservoir has a storage capacity of 2.9 thousand million cubic feet (tmc ft).
Historical Context
Constructed in 1927.
The reservoirs on the Esi, a Musi River tributary, aimed to provide drinking water for Hyderabad and safeguard the city from the 1908 floods.
Built during the rule of the last Nizam of Hyderabad, Nizam VII, and named after his youngest son, Himayat Ali Khan.
The reservoirs, Himayat Sagar & Osman Sagar, have traditionally supplied water to Hyderabad & Secunderabad.
But now struggle to meet the demand due to population growth.
